After sliding meaningfully in the previous quarter, the U.S. stock market regained its footing at the end of 2015. Though volatility picked up later in the period – likely in anticipation of the Fed’s decision to raise short-term interest rates for the first time in nearly a decade – and some economic sectors gave back most of their early quarter gains, stocks ultimately advanced. The recovery was less pronounced in the small cap universe, with the Russell 2000® Value Index (RUJ) rebounding +2.9% during Q4 and bringing its full year return to -7.5%.
